Commuters to note temporary road closures in Makhaza

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate will close certain roads in Makhaza in Khayelitsha from Tuesday, 29 March 2022 until 29 April 2022, in order to install stormwater pipes.
The roads that will be closed include:
Govan Mbeki Road from Baden Powell Drive (R300) to the Govan Mbeki Road (M9) and Spiro M Avenue / Sekeca Road intersection
Nyanda Avenue from Govan Mbeki Road to Dlavu Close
Fukutha Road from Govan Mbeki Road to Cebula Street.
The roads are closed in order to accommodate:
The installation of stormwater pipes and connection to an existing stormwater manhole, located in the Govan Mbeki Road and Nyanda Avenue / Fukutha Road intersection
The installation of sewer pipes and connection to an existing sewer manhole, located in Nyanda Avenue.
The following measures are in place to accommodate motorists and residents while the construction is under way:
Access will be provided to the closed section of Govan Mbeki Road, Nyanda Avenue and Fukutha Road via Walter Sisulu Street (M45), Fukutha Road and Spiro M Avenue
Motorists will be deviated from Baden Pawell Drive to the R45 access to Makhaza and the flag personnel, wearing visible reflective vests, will always accommodate pedestrians.
The road intersection at Govan Mbeki Road, Nyanda Avenue and Fukutha Road will be closed with jersey barriers for about seven to ten working days while the work to the existing Stormwater water line is ongoing
Govan Mbeki Road will be closed from Baden Powell Drive (R310) to the Govan Mbeki Road (M9) and Spiro M Avenue / Cekeca Road intersection.
Nyanda Avenue will be closed from Govan Mbeki Road to Dlavu Close. Fukutha Road will be closed from Govan Mbeki Road to Cebula Street
Signage displaying: ‘Construction Ahead Road Closed’, will be erected in Nyanda Avenue, Fukutha road and Govan Mbeki Road intersection
Motorists coming from Baden Powell Drive will have access to Makhaza via the M45 (Walter Sisulu Road) and all detour signs will be in place before the road is closed. Motorists from Nyanda Avenue will be deviated to Spiro M Avenue – Cekeca Road – Folokhwe Crescent Fukutha Road via Walter Sisulu Road (M45) to Baden Pawell Drive.
Motorists from Fukutha Road will be deviated to Folokhwe Crescent via Walter Sisulu Road (M45) to Baden Pawell Drive.
Traffic calming signs will be erected along the roads where traffic deviations will take place
‘I want to appeal to Makhaza residents and surrounding communities to please be patient with us during the construction period. We are working towards improving their living conditions and bringing them services that will benefit them for generations to come. The work is urgent and we will try to complete this project as soon as possible so that we can limit the inconvenience and impact on residents and commuters,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
A ‘Residents only’ access will be provided to ensure that residents living in the area.
‘Ndicela nisinyamenzele (please bear with us),’ said Councillor Quintas.
The access and exit control of the traffic will be accommodated by flag persons.
‘We have delineators erected along the edge of the road to prevent motorists from driving into the construction area. Concrete jersey barriers will be erected where the road is closed to prevent people from entering the construction area. Visible warning signs cautioning the public about excavations and other construction activities will be installed as well. We want the works to continue uninterrupted, as far as possible, so that the construction can be completed in the scheduled time and for life to return normal,’ said Councillor Quintas.
